Sensors located on or near the vacuum’s shock-absorbing bumpers allow it to steer through these obstructions without getting slowed down. Just which sensors a robot vacuum uses and how they work can vary by manufacturer and model, but these are common to all: These sensors trigger programmed behaviors that determine how the robot responds. Instead, they use various sensors to detect obstacles and other hazards, measure how far they’ve travelled, and discover new areas to cover. But they don’t see the world the way we do, even when there is a camera onboard. To effectively clean a room, a robot needs to move freely through the space while staying out of trouble.
